Newest Voyager Pop-Up Resident ARKADE Hosts Opening Night Celebration:
Friday, June 7th, 2013 from 6pm to 9pm
SAN FRANCISCO, CA May 31, 2013 – On Friday, June 7th, 2013 from 6pm to 9pm, San Francisco boutique Voyager and art and fashion collective ARKADE will throw an opening night party celebrating a month-long residency at the Voyager store, 365 Valencia St. in San Francisco. ARKADE members Robyn Miller and Jenni Witt will transform the Voyager pop-up space into a slice of the Southwestern landscape, inspired by the paintings and persona of iconic artist Georgia O’Keefe. The pop-up will feature a curated selection of vintage looks from Miller’sHeritage Mercantile and contemporary jewelry from Witt’s Band of Gold, with new products added several times each week and updated onshoparkade.tumblr.com.
ARKADE is a collaborative adventure between “two local girls who were once somebodies.” Robyn Miller, former frontwoman of The Peels, is a solo artist and actress selling her sophisticated brand of vintage as Heritage Mercantile. Jenni Witt, a former designer buyer, now works with other artists to create unique jewelry capsules and textile designs under name Band of Gold. After meeting through a mutual friend, the pair quickly realized they shared more than “expert macramé skills, a love of yacht rock and extraordinarily raunchy senses of humor.” Joined by former Atrium buyer Jen Scott, they decided to pool their talents to form ARKADE, a community of stores selling independent goods under one roof. Opening permanently in Oakland this Fall, the Voyager pop-up marks ARKADE’s debut.
“For the Voyager pop-up, we wanted to approach the current fascination with desert culture from a different angle, so we turned to the photographic portraits that Alfred Stieglitz took of Georgia O’Keeffe,” says Witt, who will showcase collection pieces from Pamela Love, Annie Costello Brown, HARP and Job & Boss with one-of-a-kind capsules from Hazel Cox, Spinelli Kilcollen and Big Big Things commissioned just for the show. “Though they were taken nearly a century ago, there is a very modern, confident sensuality in her attitude that feels similar to how women on the West Coast are dressing right now. They are reclaiming craft and color, re-interpreting this New Age Artist-Mom style. It’s a nod to old-school feminism… and it’s sexy.”
“It’s all about taking those references and adding a contrast,” adds Miller. “Though my vintage pieces are from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, they are meant to work back into contemporary looks: loose, oversized silhouettes over tiny silk bandeaux, bone linen 80’s Flax jackets against dark florals, insanely short shorts with sensible vintage Clergerie shoes. We really drew from the elemental colors of O’Keefe’s paintings as well; those warm clays, dusky blues and faded blacks. Of course, there’s also a little nod to the animal kingdom… West Coast or Southwest, everyone needs a spirit guide!”The ARKADE pop-up at Voyager Shop (365 Valencia) is open daily from 11am – 7pm with new items added to the store several times each week through July 7th, 2013. Stock updates, event details and lookbooks will be posted daily on shoparkade.tumblr.com. Contact Voyager at (415) 779-2712 or email email@example.com for details.
